Dane J. Spencer is an American musician and music industry professional known for being theformer bassist for the melodic rock band Sojourn. He also has a long career as a music entrepreneur and consultant.

Music Career Highlights

  • Discography: He recorded several albums with Sojourn, including "Lookin’ for More" (1985), "Different Points of View," and "World of Spirits".

  • Spencer/Bullock: After Sojourn, he continued working with lead vocalist Kevin Bullock on their project, Spencer/Bullock, releasing the album "Games of the Heart".

  • He played Bass on the 1998 Record "The Lost Years" by Dave Mendenhall.

  • Industry Work: He later founded independent labels Song Haus Music and Rewind Records, focusing on reissuing hard rock and hair metal catalogs.

  • Education: Spencer has also served as an adjunct professor in the Digital Media department at Utah Valley University, teaching courses on digital distribution and copyright law. 

 

Music Career

 

Bassist for Sojourn:

A veteran of the music industry, Spencer played bass and managed the band from January 1982 to January 1989. During his tenure, Sojourn achieved success on an independent label, gaining radio play in major U.S. markets and internationally in countries like Germany, Japan, Italy, Sweden, and the UK.

The "Spencer/Bullock" Project

After Sojourn, Spencer and Kevin Bullock collaborated on new music as the "Spencer/Bullock" project. This work was described as exploring a broader range of rock music styles. They eventually signed with the US label Touchwood. While specific albums for the "Spencer/Bullock" project are not as readily available as Sojourn's work, their collaboration highlights Spencer's continued activity as a musician and industry professional. From 1997-2000.

 

In 2000 Sojourn reunited for a album for Point Music/AOR Heaven Germany and World Of Spirits was released in 2001 in the United States on Song Haus Music and for all other territories aboard by Point Music/AOR Heaven.

Session Work:

While no longer touring, Spencer continues to be active in the music scene, performing session work and recording with musicians across the country. He still actively plays the bass and celebrated his 70th birthday still playing in late.

 

Beyond performing, Spencer has held numerous executive and educational positions within the music industry:

 

Song Haus Music: He has been the Owner/CEO of Song Haus Music, an independent label and artist development/management company, since May 1998.

 

Rewind Records: Since 1999, he has been the Owner/Founder of Rewind Records, a joint venture with Sony Music focused on reissuing back catalogs not available digitally.

 

Metallic Blue Records: He is a co-owner of Metallic Blue Records, a label based in Salt Lake City, Utah, that re-issues hard rock/hair metal albums that never received a proper physical release.

 

S&R Entertainment: From 2010 to 2020, Spencer was the Owner/CEO of S&R Entertainment, an artist relations, branding, and marketing consultancy firm with clients including Digitech and Dean Zelinsky Private Label Guitars.

 

Educator: Spencer also served as an Adjunct Professor at Utah Valley University from 2008 to 2020, developing and teaching a course on the new media landscape, digital
